Plant & Pot Size Guide

Houseplant Size Guide

By default, all our houseplants come in recyclable nursery pots. Whenever we say 'Plant Size' we are referring to the diameter of the bareroot soil.

Choosing the Right Decorative Pot

When it comes to choosing the right decorative pots, the general rule of thumb is to select pots sized between 0.75 - 1.5 inches more than plant size (diameter). This ensures that the roots have enough room to grow for atleast a few months after which you may need to repot into a bigger pot.

Banana plant houseplant? That’s right. If you are not fortunate enough to live in a warm region where you can grow this tropical plant outdoors, then why not grow an indoor banana plant (Musa oriana) instead. With enough light and water, an indoor banana tree makes an excellent houseplant. She offers interesting foliage and white flowers emerging from purple buds.

Plant Size

4 inch standard plastic nursery pot.

Light

Most types of bananas plants prefer to grow in full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight on most days. However, some varieties can scorch easily and will do better in partial shade.

Water

Banana trees are tropical and originate in rainforests, so they need a lot of water and plenty of moisture in the air. They do best when planted in groups fairly close together, as this helps to retain moisture in the leaves. Water regularly to make sure the soil stays evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot.

Plant Specific Care

Soil
These plants love organically rich, deep soil with good drainage and a slightly acidic soil pH. They typically have poor tolerance for salt in the soil.

Temperature and Humidity
These plants thrive in warm, humid conditions, but they don't like temperature extremes. Even the hardy, cold-tolerant banana tree species prefer consistent temperatures ranging between 75 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures and dry conditions can cause the plants to quickly die back. To raise the humidity, mist the leaves daily.

Fertilizer
Banana trees are heavy feeders. Apply a balanced fertilizer on a regular basis throughout the growing season, following label instructions. Also, mix compost into the soil annually to raise the level of organic matter.
